Patrick Hemmerlé

In this lecture, Patrick Hemmerlé will shed light on aspects of taste in music, a concept that has been much discussed by composers, performers, and music critics from the Baroque to the present. The talk, illustrated by recordings, as well as by examples played live, will show how each generation sets its own taste criteria. What seems desirable to one artistic movement can considered outmoded, or even vulgar by the next generation. The important distinction between taste and fashion will also be considered. Musical examples will include works by Bach arranged by composers such as Gounod, Stokowski, or Busoni, as well as music by Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, and Mahler.
