BEETHOVEN Sonata in D Op.31 No.2 “Tempest”
CHOPIN Ballade No.2 in F major Op.38
DEBUSSY Estampes
LISZT Liebesträume, Réminiscences de Lucia Di Lammermoor
"...the flair of a full-scale virtuoso and a sparkling intelligence" BBC Music Magazine
Beethoven’s Tempest Sonata is the composer’s most personal musical mirror of his impassioned Heiligenstadt testament in which he expresses the agony of failing hearing. It is contrasted with the opening calm of Chopin’s Ballade No.2, Debussy’s Estampes and both love and virtuosity from Abbé Liszt. Nicholas Walker studied in Moscow and recently gave two highly acclaimed Wigmore Hall recitals of music by Balakirev.
