Both Gods Baccus and Ceres, feature on the Custom House to signal how wine and corn enriched Lynn’s merchants. In 1750 corn exports and wine imports from Europe still generated the wealth to build and rebuild what is today’s Old Town. Lynn boasts an exceptional series of historic houses and warehouses in its riverside streets. Breweries micro and macro could also be found in our Wash haven whose numerous taverns attracted its teeming maritime population. Part of Bagges famous brewery (1692- 1929) survives in King Street where almost every west side property included maltings.
This walk from the Tuesday Market Place to Nelson Street will reveal the particular places and people associated with Lynn’s drink trade since 1700. To pay visits to two or three merchant houses and a wine cellar have also been programmed. At the end of the walk the party will enjoy a glass of wine at a house and courtyard/garden in a riverside street.
Dr Paul Richards has very kindly agreed to host this fundraising walk with proceeds going to the King’s Lynn Festival.
