The late night concert as part of the 2022 Early Music Day sees award-winning period group, Ensemble Hesperi, paint a picture of London’s vibrant musical scene in the early 1700s, through the lens of the extraordinary coal merchant Thomas Britton, one of London’s first concert promoters. His musical evenings, hosted in his small coal-loft in Clerkenwell, attracted the best performers and composers of the day, including Handel himself. At this time, musicians were pouring into London from across Europe to enjoy the rich opportunities for theatre work and private patronage.
The Italian style of composition, pioneered by Corelli, was the height of fashion, and London’s concert rooms and theatres were soon filled with Italian opera, chamber music, and virtuosic solo repertoire. This programme features music by several of the musicians who performed in Britton’s concert series, including a sparkling trio sonatas by Handel, and a dramatic work by Purcell, whose Sonatas in Three Parts brought Italian trio sonata style to England in the 1680s. In the informal atmosphere of the coal loft, Britton would also have enjoyed raucous divisions on popular tunes of the day, popular dances by Playford, and variations such the “Ground on the Scotch Humour” by the astounding London-based Italian violinist Nicola Matteis.
