Festival Feature: Composer Howard Skempton

The King's Lynn Festival has a long tradition of presenting contemporary classical music in an intimate setting on the first Monday of the 2-week Festival.

This year we are delighted to welcome eminent composer Howard Skempton, in conversation with the Festival's Artistic Director Ambrose Miller.  Join them for a glass of wine on July 13 and enjoy a varied programme of music for clarinet, cello and piano.

The concert takes place in King's Lynn's historic Town Hall on Saturday Market Place, with only 100 seats arranged in a horse-shoe configuration to ensure everyone is close to the performance.

Howard Skempton will present four of his compositions, performed by talented festival regulars Sarah Thurlow (clarinet) and Ben Davies (cello), with Jonathan Musgrave on piano.

This is a reasonably short concert offering an excellent introduction to new classical music.  With Skempton's work described by The Guardian newspaper as "Compositions that cloak their complex beauty under a veneer of simplicity" and Sarah Thurlow's clarinet mastery, this is set to be a truly special evening.

The concert will also include a new work by young composer Alex Woolf, the BBC's Young Composer of the Year in 2012.
