KING’S LYNN FESTIVAL - DIAMOND JUBILEE YEAR

King’s Lynn Festival is set to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee with a sparkling programme which reflects the event’s rich 60-year history. Classical music provides the cornerstones of the event which maintains its tradition of excellence while offering “something for everyone”.

There is an exciting mix of favourite names from the past and rising stars of the future. From the top of the classical music tree comes the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Russian-born pianist Nikolai Demidenko, BBC Young Musician winner, cellist Guy Johnston, and counter-tenor James Bowman. Award-winning young musicians making their names in the classical music world will perform great masterpieces and fine but lesser-known works at a series of five coffee concerts.

A Diamond Jubilee Opera Gala will feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and soloists from Welsh National Opera.

The BBC Concert Orchestra is to record Friday Night is Music Night with guest stars Graham Bickley and Jodie Prenger. Comedian Barry Cryer and folk legends Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy will add to the variety. Favourites returning include the Black Dyke Band and The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. World-famous trumpeter Crispian Steele-Perkins and The Handel Players will capitalise on the fine acoustic in St Nicholas’ Chapel. King’s Lynn Festival Chorus will team up with the English Chamber Orchestra, and Christopher Hogwood, a popular personality from the Festival’s past, will be in conversation with BBC Radio 3’s James Jolly.

The Guildhall of St George has always been at the heart of King’s Lynn Festival and historian Dr Paul Richards will give an illustrated talk about the significance of this historic gem. The Festival exhibition offers a fascinating collection of paintings featuring people and places linked with the event’s history.
