Festival Exhibition: Lynn from all Angles - Walter Dexter and Jon Harris

Sunday 15 July 2018 - Saturday 04 August 2018

11am - 4pm daily • St. George's Guildhall • Admission Free

An exhibition in the Fermoy Gallery of works by Walter Dexter (1876-1958) and Jon Harris, who first exhibited at the King's Lynn Festival with John Sutcliffe in 1967.

The paintings and drawings of the two artists, some on loan from private collections and rarely seen, cover the last 100 years of Lynn and especially the waterfront.

Walter Dexter (1876-1958), grew up in King’s Lynn and became a prolific artist who toured Europe in the
footsteps of the Dutch and Flemish old masters.

He studied medieval architecture and aimed to paint all England’s cathedrals (he only missed Worcester). He also illustrated Methuen travel guides but Lynn became his overwhelming subject with its exceptional historic buildings, great river and ever-changing skies.

Cambridge-based artist, illustrator and calligrapher Jon Harris shares Dexter’s fascination with the town, its architecture and especially its waterfront. He has become well-acquainted with Lynn since making Cambridge his home in 1965.  Jon Harris had his first exhibition, shared with John Sutcliffe, at the 1967 Lynn Festival and
one drawing in its original frame, will be on show again.

The paintings and drawings of the two artists cover the century between the First World War Zeppelin raid over the town and the Lynn Lumiere lightworks of today.

Jon Harris says the town he first explored as a 24-year-old was as Dexter left it with its amazing juxtaposition of medieval and modern buildings as seen from the Ouse banks where he painted.
