Festival Walk: Discovering Lynn's Hanseatic World
with Paul Richards
Monday 13 July 2015
Tour Guide: Dr Paul Richards
From the Custom House to the Hanse House
Meet at the Custom House at 2pm
In 2015 Lynn celebrates 10 years as a member of the New Hanseatic League founded in 1980. Its 183 towns have a population of 25 million across 16 nations in northern Europe, but all share a Hanseatic heritage. The only English members are Lynn and Hull.
This afternoon walk aims to raise awareness and appreciation of Lynn’s fascinating Hanseatic heritage. Its origins are to be found in the 14th and 15th centuries when the Norfolk port was a prominent English partner of the German Hanse whose head cities were Lübeck and Hamburg.
The tour will finish around 3.30 pm with a short tour of the Hanse House. Here is the sole surviving trading post or Kontor of the medieval German Hanse in England. It was built in the years 1475 – 80.
